On January 1st,it became mandatory for all motorcycles that have an engine displacement greater than cc to have an ABS system fitted. In addition, smaller motorised two-wheelers with a displacement of 50cc or more are now required to have either ABS or a combined brake system fitted.
Fromit became a legal requirement for all new motorbikes produced from January onwards. If you have recently purchased a new motorbike that fits the criteria, it will be fitted with an ABS system designed to protect you and other road users from injury or accidents. ABS, or an anti-lock braking system, prevents the wheels of a bike from locking up when braking.
Based on information from wheel speed sensors, the ABS unit is able to adjust the pressure of the brake fluid in order to keep the bike upright. This, in turn, helps the rider to remain stable and will decrease the stopping distance required in a hard braking situation. ABS is particularly useful on wet or slippery road conditions. This makes it incredibly advanced and offers important additional safety features for riders. Two wheels are generally less stable than four wheels, no matter how expert a rider you are.
Braking hard can destabilise your bike, which can lead to your front or rear wheel locking up, possibly resulting in the bike sliding or overturning. Obviously, these situations are incredibly dangerous for both the riders and other road users. Anti-lock braking ABS systems on motorcycles have a number of benefits, not least of all to help reduce the rate of death and severe injury from motorcycle crashes in the UK. As of January this year, all new bikes will be fitted with an ABS system.
But, with this in mind, where does it leave riders of bikes that are not so new? If your bike was manufactured prior to January and does not have an ABS system, there is no legal requirement that you should have one fitted.
There is, however, the unquestionable reality that bikes with an ABS system fitted are considered to be a lot safer than those without. ABS systems are expensive — there are no two ways about it. A bit like when Fuel Injection first came out, some people did away with it and chose to retro-fit carbs instead.

In most cases, it will be easier and far cheaper to buy a new bike instead of fit your own ABS system. A manufacturer-produced system will be cheaper and more capable. Whether this will change in years to come to a potential MOT fail, only time will tell.

Braking - as easy and safe as ever. The right braking technology is of significant importance to motorcyclists in two respects, because only the reliable technology of the brake system combined with the rider's acquired skills can diffuse critical riding situations.
In dangerous situations which occur suddenly, even practised motorcyclists tend towards overbraking the front wheel or causing the back wheel to lock. So a modern anti-lock brake system ABS is therefore part of the safety equipment of any high-quality motorcycle. This gives the rider the optimum stopping distance at all times without the risk of falling due to the wheels locking.
Both systems reliably prevent the wheels from locking in an emergency braking situation by means of electronically controlled hydraulics.
To do so, wheel sensors measure the speed at which the front and rear wheels are rotating, and so can immediately identify if either wheel is locking up. The sensors forward the measuring impulse to a processor, which activates a pressure modulator in the hydraulic brake circuit of the front or rear wheel. The actuated pressure modulator reduces the brake pressure in a fraction of a second and then increases it again.
This ensures that there is always precisely the required level of brake pressure available on the brake system of the corresponding wheel in the control range of the ABS to stop the wheel from reaching the locking limit. An electrically operated hydraulic pump assists the brake pressure here generated by the brake lever and cylinder.
For models built sincea new more finely regulating system is fitted, which works without a brake servo I-ABS II. With partially integral brake systems, the handlebar lever applies the brakes to both wheels, while the footbrake lever only acts on the rear wheel brake.
ABS systems are a clear gain in safety compared to conventional brake systems, as frequently described in motorcycle tests. The control electronics and the hydraulics of the brake servo and antilock brake system are housed in the central pressure modulator of the integral brake. A total of three processors ensure the highest possible level of safety of the system. Two microcontrollers control the control system in parallel, while a third monitors the process.
Every time the ignition is switched on, the system carries out a self-test, during which the ABS indicator lights flash in the cockpit. They are automatically switched off as soon as the speed sensors transmit a corresponding signal and the system works without faults.

Remember not to force it or pull too hard.
Along the line there are another two 10mm bolts that need to be removed—just follow the ABS sensor line to get at them. The initial bolts on this application are pictured here. Different vehicles are set up differently, but the idea is the same in most cases. The important thing to remember is never force anything to move. If you've removed all of the bolts and other attachment components, you should be able to pull the sensor away with no effort at all.
With the sensor free, take your rag and wipe the sensor until it's clean. I prefer not to use any chemicals on the sensor to avoid potential problems. If, however, the sensor is really grungy, use a mild soapy solution and rinse well. The ABS sensors are precision instruments in a crude environment. They're tough enough to hang off the brakes of a fast-moving vehicle, but one good knock and they could be damaged beyond repair.
Keep this in mind when working with these sensors. A little care taken now will save you a costly repair later. To finish the job, reinstall the sensor in exactly the same manner as you removed it.
Don't skip the step of reattaching the line or wiring to those mounting points. They may seem like they don't matter, but it can get very expensive if you make a bad decision.
